Attention Human Resources – The importance of checking a potential employee’s IC or passport

Posted on Posted in Uncategorized

If you’ve ever worked in human resources in Singapore, you often find that part of your Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) includes checking a potential employee’s original IC or passport, and recording that you’ve done so.

Have you ever wondered why?

Well, one good reason for doing so is to avoid inadvertently hiring a foreigner without a work permit. This is an offence under the law[i].

In effect, the law requires the employer to exercise due diligence to ascertain the nationality of the employee,[ii] and an employer cannot prove this unless she checks the passport, document of identity or other travel document of the employee.[iii]

So don’t forget to check!
