Should Government limit help to businesses?

When it comes to government assistance for SMEs, Goodrich CEO Chan Chong Beng had this to say:

The government’s job is to provide the infrastructure and all the necessary things to help the business. But it is not the government’s job to guarantee the success of the business. The businessmen will still have to work themselves … they have to be enterprising, they have to be hungry, because if they are not hungry, no amount of government help is going to help them.

He also felt that developing capabilities is a good thing, but entrepreneurs need to have that fire in them:

But at the same time, you have also to nurture them to have the culture of entrepreneurship. They have to be enterprising, they have to be hungry, because if they are not hungry, no amount of government help is going to help them. I think if they have decided to go into business, they all should be hungry. And the question is, is their best really their best?
